This is the second book in The Arrow and The Flame series by A.E. Lister and it did not disappoint. There are mild spoilers about the first book below.
Simon Bartholemew White is a witch like his mother was. He struggles to manage his powers, which seem to center on calling out the fiercest of weather – hurricane winds and lightning — burning all his enemies to ash. Kind of like his abusive father. The Arrow’s captain, Dinesh Martin, has taken a decided interest in Simon, his red-headed “Rooster,” who misbehaves until the good captain takes him in hand. And in ropes. And even shares him a bit (consensually) with trusted companions. And Simon has fallen quite a lot in love with Dinesh and life at sea. The piracy is a dangerous business, however, and Simon’s witch powers save the crew and The Arrow more than once, so everyone trusts him, even as they fear him.
